Road naming for former Councillor Alan Pegg

With the Mayor, Sir Steve Bullock and Jonathan Pegg, Alan's son

It was a fitting tribute to my long serving co-Councillor, Alan Pegg that he now has a road named after him . Alan served for many years representing Sydenham East ward. He was born in Perry Rise and lived in Sydenham - he was 81 when he passed away in Lewisham Hospital on Monday 28th July 2014.

Alan was first elected when Lewisham and Deptford Boroughs merged in 1964/5. He lost his seat at the1968 election but was re-elected in1971 and remained a Councillor at every subsequent election until he stood down in May 2002. He served on numerous Committees during his Council service and was Chair of the Planning Committee for many years.

I was elected to represent Sydenham East in 1986 and found Alan to be a fountain of local knowledge and well respected as a community representative. His top tip to me was always carry a small notebook to write down issues people raise. It is unusual to find continuity of service to the local community for over 30 years and I am pleased that we remember Alan on this road at the entrance to Bell Green.
