New tap room for Ignition Brewery at Sydenham Centre

Ignition Brewery makes great beer in Lewisham. What makes them distinctive is that the tasty beer is brewed by people with learning disabilities. They pay the London Living Wage, so the more beer they sell, the more jobs they create.

The non-profit microbrewery has already been in business at the back of The Sydenham Centre, but earlier this year they decided to expand their scope and make use of their talents by selling their beer directly to the public.

Following an astonishingly positive crowdfunding campaign Ignition Brewery launched their new Taproom at the front of the Sydenham Centre! Hundreds of people supported the campaign in overshooting its target and ensuring a successful opening in September.

The space now looks great, and on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays the Ignition Taproom is open to the public - their current hours are 5-9pm Thursdays, 5-10pm Fridays, and 2-10pm Saturdays.

I attended the launch and had a chat to Nick at Ignition who said “We really hope people come down to visit us and help us find our way to being a fantastic community Taproom and a colourful part of Sydenham life”. Yoga, pilates, and salsa continue in the space during the week.

“The tap-room will enable us to take it a step-further and have a high-quality venue that sells our beer direct to the public and engages with all sectors of the community. We love being able to serve our beer, watch people enjoy it, and talk to people about what we do.”

Ignition Brewery is a very special part of Lewisham. They employ people with learning disabilities, offering them job training and an accepting, inclusive work environment. The brewery also pays the London Living Wage, and sells to local pubs, cafes, and businesses. And everyone seems to agree: they do it all while crafting a delicious product.

I’m grateful that myself and the Lewisham Council were able to be a part of this exciting venture and provide a building for Ignition. I had a great time at the launch party, and it’s clear the taproom is off to a wonderful start. I’m looking forward to seeing another local business thrive in Lewisham.
