Silver Sunday was a Soaring Success

On 7 October I was delighted to open and take part in the Intergenerational Silver Sunday Fun-day, presented by the Positive Ageing Council at the Deptford Lounge. It was an exciting, full day, packed with activities and workshops ranging from QiGong martial arts, tea dancing, and flower crafts, to IT tablet instruction and a matinee of the beloved classic, Singing in the Rain. The free event was created after the success of last year’s Silver Sunday, and once again, everyone who stopped by had a wonderful time relaxing and socializing with friends, both old and new.

Silver Sunday was great for all ages, but I especially enjoyed seeing all the resources and information dedicated specifically for seniors. One of the stalls had a fall-prevention demo in order to help our older population stay safe.

My fellow councillor Kevin Bonavia gave a presentation on Lewisham’s democracy review, which we want citizens of all ages to be involved in. It’s important to make sure the voices of the older generation are being heard in our local government.

Huge thank you to everyone who helped arrange this wonderful day, especially Adult Learning Lewisham, Go On Lewisham, JOY, and Lewisham Young Mayor for partnering with the Positive Ageing Council to make the event possible. All the volunteers who directed the activities and provided lunch definitely made this day special. Events like Silver Sunday, supporting and engaging older citizens are part of what makes Lewisham a great place to live for the whole community. Can’t wait to see what’s in store next year!
