Alex Yee - shortlisted for 2024 BBC Sports Personality

Fresh from having the Ladywell Arena named after him, our home-grown Alex Yee Olympic medal winning triathlete is one of six sportspeople on the shortlist for the BBC Sports Personality of 2024



Alex enjoyed a stunning 2024 in which he was crowned both Olympic and world champion. At the Paris Games he produced a magnificent sprint finish to overtake New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde in the closing stages of the run to win his first individual Olympic gold. He then went on to be part of the Great Britain team that won bronze in the mixed relay. Yee’s dominance extended to the World Triathlon Series with victories in Cagliari and Weihai helping him claim the first world title of his career. Alex who won a Gold and Silver medal for Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics was named as the first-ever recipient of the Mayor of Lewisham’s Recognition Award. Alex, who was born and raised in Lewisham, won Gold in the Mixed relay triathlon and Silver in the Men’s individual triathlon, at his first Olympic Games in 2020. Alex began his triathlon career with Crystal Palace Triathletes and he then began running competitively at the Ladywell Arena and was awarded bursaries from Lewisham Council to support him with travel expenses for meets and competitions. As a youngster, he represented Lewisham at the London Youth Games and in the Mini London Marathon, winning in the under-15 category in 2013. He was awarded the Mayor’s Special Achievement Award at the Lewisham Sport Awards in 2012. Alex attended Stillness Junior School in Brockley and was honoured with a special mural near Brockley station earlier this year, designed by local artist Lionel Stanhope.



Alex is an inspiration to our young people and I have followed his progress from representing Lewisham at the London Youth Games, his training at Ladywell Arena through to the Olympic Games.
